Swing Tempo. - Master - (Changed - 16/11/2007)

Most golfers use the muscles of the arms to swing the golf club into the contact area, rather than a combination of the rotational movement of the shoulders and the correct use of the shoulder muscles to push the arms that extra few inches to the absolute end of the back swing movement, therefore, the golf swing carried out in this manner is a very fast movement.

This arm action is perfectly acceptable as long as the tempo of the movement is controlled and the triangular shape of the upper body unit is fully maintained.

The tempo of the golf swing is a very difficult thing to relate to the golfer but if you wish to achieve an even tempo of the golf swing especially during the down swing movement, it is absolutely vital that the elbows are held as close together as it is physically possible throughout the golf swing.

By maintaining the upper body unit as a compact one piece and keeping the arms fully extended, it ensures that the Centrifugal Effect will control the rotational speed of the shoulders.

For example, whilst the arms are held in a fully extended condition , the Centrifugal Effect means that the shoulders cannot be rotated at a very high speed.( See below)

However, because the arms are held in a fully extended condition, it means that the swing arc of the club head is much wider, which more than compensates for the slower rotation of the shoulders.

===============================================================

To understand the Centrifugal Effect carry out the following:-If you fold your arms across your chest you will find that you are able to rotate the shoulders at a very fast speed.

However if you hold the arms in the fully extended condition and pull the arms as close together as is physically possible so that the elbows are adjacent to each other, you will find that you cannot achieve anywhere near the same rotational speed of the shoulders as was achieved when the arms were held in the folded condition.

This reduced speed of the shoulders is caused by the "Centrifugal Effect"
