Shoulders. Master - (Changed - 31/03/2008)

If you are experiencing very erratic golf shots, it is probably because you have fallen in to habit of simply lifting the arms/golf club to the end of the back swing movement -- instead of using the left shoulder to force the shoulder/arms-unit to rotate around the central core of the spine and literally using the rotational movement of the shoulder/arms-unit to push the passive arms/golf club to the end of the back swing movement.

(To a casual observer, a golf swing performed by a golfer who lifts the arms to the end of the back swing movement will appear to be quite normal, this is because the shoulders automatically follow the movement of the arms.)

Therefore from the moment you begin the golf swing you must make a conscious effort to use the left shoulder as being in over-all control of the rotational movement of the shoulder/arms-unit and use this rotational movement of the shoulder/arms-unit to literally push the arms to the end of the back swing movement.

As the rotational movement of the shoulders push the passive arms to the end of the back swing movement, the arms are pushed as far as possible across in front of the chest and therefore the only way that the passive arms can reach the correct top of the back swing position is by continuing to rotate the shoulders as far as possible .

Therefore at the end of the back swing movement, the arms have been pushed fully across the front of the chest and unless action is taken to retrieve the position during the down swing movement, the arms will remain in this position to the completion of the golf swing.

As soon as the left foot is pressed to the ground, the hips begin to rapidly rotate/pivot/sway towards the target area and simultaneously the shoulders rapidly begin to rotate into the down swing movement, but because the passive arms/golf club are unable to immediately follow the movement of the shoulders and therefore the passive arms/golf club lags further behind the movement of the shoulders, thus creating a tremendous twisting effect upon the upper body and therefore storing up a large amount of torsion/energy to be used later on in the down swing and the follow through movement.

However, eventually a combination of the hip and the rotational movement of the shoulders force the passive arms/golf begin to move away from the top of the back swing position, but as the shoulders get just over halfway back to the original address position, two things must happen simultaneously:-

1) The golfer must fractionally begin to slow down the rotational movement of the shoulders.

2) The passive arms/golf club begin to move independently of the shoulders thus releasing the stored energy and the passive arms/golf club literally swing into the contact area.

Therefore it is the skill of the golfer to judge the movement of the shoulders and the swinging movement of the passive arms/golf club, so that the club head makes contact with the ball at the precise moment the shoulders return to the original address position.

At the precise moment the club head makes contact with the ball, the shoulders must be in the original address position, the head must be positioned so that the left eye is slightly behind the ball, the hands must not be ahead of the original address position and the weight of the body predominantly over the left leg.

However as soon as the shoulders return to the original address position, they must stop rotating, albeit for only a milli-second, whilst the passive arms/golf club continue to swing into the follow through movement, thus swinging the club head to the bottom of the swing arc, thus performing the Key Movement,

As soon as both arms are straight the whole body pivots on the left leg and quickly turns to fully face the target area.

So remember, "The shoulders must control the movement of the arms"-- and definitely not "The arms controlling the movement of the shoulders"
