Shoulder/Hips-unit.-Master-
(Changed - 25/04/2008)
The Shoulder/Hips unit is basically the whole body
that has been fully twisted by the action of rotating the shoulders
to the end of the back swing whilst the lower part of the body resists
the movement.
But please note, that at
the end of the back swing movement, the whole body is formed into
a fully twisted condition and it is important at this point to allow
the whole twisted body unit to become totally passive to the movement
of the hips.
It is possible to keep the whole twisted body unit in a totally
passive condition so that as the hips rotate/pivot/sway towards
the target area, the whole twisted body unit is forced to rotate
about its axis a movement that automatically cause the shoulders
to rotate back to the original address position, but importantly,
as long as the hips continue to rotate/pivot to the conclusion of
the golf swing movement, the whole twisted body unit will simply
continue to rotate about its axis in a similar
manner.
However just before the shoulders reach the limit of the back
swing movement, the left foot is pressed to the ground and simultaneously
the hips are forced to rotate/pivot/sway towards the target area,
thus increasing the torsion of the muscles to their maximum.
As soon as the left foot is pressed to
the ground, the hips begin to rapidly rotate/pivot/sway towards
the target area and almost simultaneously the whole twisted body
unit begins to rotate about its axis thus causing the shoulders
to rotate back to the original address position.
However the inertia effect upon the arms
initially cause the passive arms/golf club to lag further behind
the movement of the shoulders thus creating a high torsion of the
muscles of the shoulder region, but as the shoulders get close to
the original address position the hips begin to slow down which
has a similar effect upon the whole twisted body unit and the torsion
of the muscles of the shoulder region are released so that the passive
arms can catch up with the shoulders at the impact position.
Therefore it is the skill of the golfer
to judge the movement of the shoulders and the swinging movement
of the passive arms/golf club, so that the club head makes contact
with the ball at the precise moment the shoulders return to the
original address position.
At the precise moment the club head makes
contact with the ball, the shoulders must be in the original address
position, the head
must be positioned so that the left eye is slightly behind the ball,
the hands
must not be ahead of the original address position and the weight
of the body predominantly over the left leg.
However as soon as the shoulders return
to the original address position, they must stop
rotating, albeit for only a milli-second, whilst the passive arms/golf
club continue to aggressively swing into the follow through movement,
thus swinging the club head to the bottom of the swing arc and also
performing the Key Movement,
As soon as both arms are straight the whole body pivots on the
left leg and quickly turns to fully face the target area.
Back Swing Movement.
The
first photograph shows how the body is fully twisted at the end
of the back swing movement.
( I could probably make a fuller turn, but for the purposes of this
lesson I have stopped at this point.)
Up to this point, I have simply used the left
shoulder to force the shoulder/arms-unit to rotate around the
central core of the spine but using the rotational movement of the
shoulder/arms-unit to literally push the passive arms/golf club
to the end of the back swing movement, whilst the lower part of
the body put up the maximum resistance.
At this point the left shoulder is still forcing the shoulder/arms-unit
to rotate around the central core of the spine and simultaneously
the hips have fully rotated/pivoted
away from the frontal facing position and this is the precise moment
when I transfer the weight of my body onto the left leg and simultaneously
rotate/pivot/sway
the hips towards the target area.
However as soon as the hips begin to rotate/pivot/sway towards
the target area, the pulling action will force the twisted body
unit to begin to rotate about its axis, thus causing the shoulders
to rotate into the down swing movement, but due to the inertia
effect, there will be a very slight delay before the arms/golf
club follows the movement of the shoulders.
However it is importantly that keep the head
firmly held in the original address position and also maintain the
upper body angle.
Down Swing Movement.
This is the halfway point in the down swing movement and at
this point the torsion of the muscles that were built up during
the later stages of the back swing and the early stages of the down
swing movement is allowed to be released thus allowing the passive
arms to catch up with the shoulders at the impact position.
In this photograph you will notice that the hips have not rotated/pivoted
very far beyond the previous photograph, but the shoulders are now
back in the original address position and the passive arms/golf
club have caught up with the shoulders and are also back in the
original address position.
However as the shoulders return to this position they are held
in this position for a milli-second whilst the passive arms continue
to accelerate into the follow through movement thus swinging the
club head to the bottom of the swing arc, forcing the right arm
into the fully straightened position.
Therefore it is vital that you fully
focus on the ball, keep the head
positioned so that the left eye is slightly behind the ball with
"pin point accuracy" and in the Fixed
Frontal condition, and you must also maintain the upper
body angle until well after the ball has been struck, so that
the right shoulder can rotate under the chin as the follow through
movement is performed.
From the moment the down swing movement begins,
you must allow the whole twisted body unit to become totally passive
to the movement of the hips - learn to do this and you will begin
to experience a totally sweet strike of the ball..
All of these changes to your golf swing will not happen "overnight"
so remember, the more you practise a new movement, the more natural
the movement will become.
