Hips Rotating/Pivoting -hip03- (Changed 26/10/2007)

Using the movement of the hips to generate extra power.

Any sports activity that use the arms to apply power, such as boxing, athletic field events, racquet sports, cricket, baseball, golfing etc., these sports require a rotational movement of the shoulders to generate any significant leverage to the arms.

However, what is not generally known is that the power generated by the rotational movement of the shoulders can be dramatically increased by the correct use of the hips.

In boxing for example, instead of simply rotating the shoulders to push the right arm towards the target area, the power of the punching action can be significantly increased by rotating the hips towards the target at the same time the shoulders begin to rotate towards the target area.

Therefore by correctly using the hips during the golf swing, a similar increase in power can be achieved, for example, the pulling effect of the hips as they pivot/rotate towards the target area, initially increases the torsion of the muscles between the lower part and the upper part of the body, thus giving the down swing movement the explosive element.
