Lesson 5 --The Follow Through. (Changed - 17/11/2008)

So to continue from the point where we left off in Lesson 4:-

In this sequence, the upper body unit continues to be held as a very compact, solid one piece unit after the ball has been struck.

You will note that at the impact position, because the movement of the hips total control the down swing movement, the hips are almost fully facing the target area.

Follow Through animation.

You will notice that the hands and the club head go past the left eye before the club head makes contact with the ball. Therefore at the precise moment the club head makes contact with the ball, three things must be performed absolutely simultaneously and instantly but in this order of priority:-

1) The shoulders actually stop rotating and are held in the parallel to the target line position for a nanosecond whilst the muscles of the left shoulder pull the passive arms through the contact area at a high speed, thus moving the arms independently of the shoulders for a very short period of time, but importantly, performing the Key Movement.

2) The hands move towards the target area at the same speed as the club head.

3) The movement of the hips continue to rotate/pivot towards the target area thus forcing the whole body to pivot on the left leg so that the hips fully face the target area -- but importantly the whole body turns to fully face the target area at the same speed that the club head and the hands move towards the target area.

However whilst these three actions occur simultaneously, the head must continue to be held so that the left eye remains slightly behind the ball, the head must remain in the Fixed frontal condition and the upper body angles must be maintained so that the right shoulder will simultaneously rotate under the chin as the arms interact and thereby increasing the accuracy of the shot. -- notice the sweeping action of the golf swing.

I cannot over emphasis that the shoulders and the arms must be held tightly together as a very compact unit as the arms interact.

The key to correctly performing the follow through movement is at the precise moment the club head makes contact with the ball the shoulders must stop rotating for a nanosecond whilst the left shoulder muscles pull the passive arms/golf club through the contact area.

Let us now go on to the Complete swing.
