Shoulder/Arms-unit.-
(Changed - 03/01/2009)
Look at this video of the full
golf swing and notice how during the back swing movement the
shoulders and the
arms rotate around the central core of the spine in conjunction
with the rotationa;/pivotal movement of the hips, whilst the heel
of the left foot remains firmly on the ground.
This is a basic fundamental principle that you must learn if
you wish to play very good golf, but what you cannot see is that
the left
shoulder/left arm is in over-all control whilst the passive
arm/golf club is pushed to the end of the back swing movement.
However from the moment the down
swing movement, begins, it is the movement of the hips that
totally control the movement of a very passive shoulder/arms-unit
whilst the lower back muscles add a supplementary source
of power.
Concentrate on this basic fundamental and fit the
rest of your golf swing around it - holding the shoulders and the
arms in a very compact condition is a must principle, regardless
of what else you learn.
Therefore if you wish to play very good golf shots it is absolutely
vital that the shoulders,
the arms are held tightly together as a compact one piece unit
throughout the complete golf swing, so that any independent
movement of the arms is restricted.
(The only exception to this rule is at the precise moment the
club head makes contact with the ball when the muscles of the left
shoulder pull the passive arms through the contact area thus performing
the Key Movement.)
This compact upper body unit is achieved by
holding the elbows must be held as close together as it physically
possible, actions which pull the upper
arms closer to the upper body and ensures that the arms move in
complete synchronisation with the rotational movement of the shoulders.
In addition, by not consciously rotating the forearms whilst the
body is held in this condition, it maintains the alignment of the
club face relative to
the position of the shoulders throughout the complete golf swing
movement.
The shoulders and the arms must remain
in this compact condition at all times as the upper body unit rotates
around the central core of the spine.
When the back swing movement is performed with the elbows
held as close together as is physically possible, it will feel
very mechanical and at first and you will assume that you are not
performing a full back swing movement, in addition, as you perform
the down swing and the follow through movements, you will also assume
that you will not generate enough club head speed simply because
you did not feel as if you performed a full back swing.
However, when you see the results of performing a golf swing whilst
the shoulders and the arms are held in this very compact but passive
condition, you be amazed how long and straight the ball goes.
Therefore by maintaining the upper body in this
very compact, solid, one piece unit throughout the complete golf
swing movement, the alignment
of the club face is always under your control.
