The Movement of The Upper Body. (Changed - 02/01/2009)

It is absolutely vital that the upper body unit is held very tightly together throughout the complete golf swing movement so that the shoulders and the arms always move in complete synchronisation.

Back Swing Movement.

The back swing is performed by rotating a very compact upper body unit around the central core of the spine and simultaneously allowing the hips to rotate away from the frontal facing position so that the hips reach the limit of its movement at exactly the same time the shoulders do likewise, whilst the heel of the left foot remains firmly on the ground.

However as the shoulder/arms-unit rotate into the back swing movement you must ensure that the left shoulder/left arm in over-all control, therefore literally using the rotational movement of the compact upper body unit to push the passive arms to the end of the back swing movement, but importantly, without consciously rotating the forearms--, but importantly whilst keeping the club face square to the ball position for as long as possible.

At the end of the back swing movement the whole body adopts a fully twisted condition.

Down Swing Movement.

After a slight pause at the end of the back swing movement, the down swing movement is initiated by pressing the left foot to the ground and simultaneously forcing the hips to rotate /pivot towards the target area whilst the compact upper body unit remains in a totally passive condition and the shoulders remain parallel to the target line.
( As the torsion of the muscles between the lower part of the body and the upper part of the body reaches it absolute maximum the danger is that you will allow the shoulders to rotate away from the parallel to the target line - so concentrate on holding the shoulders parallel to the target line whilst the torsion builds up.)

A fraction of a second after the hips begin to rotate/pivot towards the target area, the lower back muscles begin to force the shoulder/arms-unit to rotate around the central core of the spine, thus automatically rotating the shoulders back to the parallel to the target line.
(The movement of the hips and the lower back muscles must remain in over-all control over the movement of the shoulders to the completion of the golf swing.)

As the shoulders rotate around the central core of the spine, a combination of the rotational movement of the shoulders and the correct use of the left shoulder/left arm will ensure that the club head makes contact with the golf ball at the precise moment the shoulders return to the parallel to the target line.

Therefore at the precise moment the club head makes contact with the ball, two things must be performed absolutely simultaneously and instantly whilst the shoulders stop rotating momentarily whilst parallel to the target line :-

1) The muscles of the left shoulder pull the passive arms through the contact area.

2) The hands move towards the target area at the same speed as the club head.

But as these actions are being performed the head must remain in such a position so that the left eye is slightly behind the ball and the upper body angles must be maintained.
