Hip
Action- Master
- (Changed - 31/12/2008)
As the compact upper body unit rotates around the central core
of the spine, the heel of the left
foot must remain firmly on the ground thus offering the maximum
resistance to the movement of the upper body unit -- therefore during
the back swing movement the hips must in conjunction with the movement
of the shoulder/arms-unit.
However during the down swing movement the hips lead the whole
movement.
Therefore whilst the shoulders are held at the end of the back
swing movement for a millisecond, the left foot is firmly pressed
to the ground and simultaneously the hips are forced to rotate/pivot
towards the target area.
A fraction of a second after the hips begin to rotate/pivot
towards the target area, the lower back muscles begin to force the
shoulder/arms-unit to rotate around the central core of the spine,
thus automatically rotating the shoulders back to the parallel to
the target line.
(The movement of the hips and the lower back muscles must remain
in over-all control over the movement of the shoulders to the completion
of the golf swing.)
But importantly, this action will ensure that the hips will
almost be fully facing the target area at the impact
position.
Exercise.
As as exercise to illustrate how a combination of the movement
of the hips and the lower back muscles control the movement of the
shoulder/arms-unit, take your normal stance. - Now whilst keeping
the head fixed over the centre of your stance, keeping the heel
of the left foot firmly on the ground and also maintaining the upper
body angles, rotate the shoulders into a short back swing movement.
At the end of the back swing movement, try to hold the shoulders
at the end of the back swing movement position whilst you force
the hips to rotate//pivot towards the target area and simultaneously
the lower back muscles begin to rotate the shoulder/arms-unit?
You will notice that the combined movement of the hips and the lower
back muscles will force the shoulders to begin to rotate around
the central core of the spine, without any effort on your behalf
to assist the movement of the shoulders.
But importantly, as long as the movement of the hips and the
lower back muscles continue to force the shoulders to rotate around
the central core of the spine to the end of the golf swing movement,
the shoulders will rotate a full semicircle, from the end of the
back swing movement right through to when the whole body fully face
the target area.
All this upper body movement is simply created by the rotational
/pivotal movement of the hips and the lower back muscles whilst
the shoulders remained in a totally passive condition.
The danger arises when you try to assist the movement of the
shoulder/arms-unit as it rotates into the down swing and the follow
through movement.
Therefore when you perform a full golf shot, the shoulders must
remain totally passive to the movement of the hips and the lower
back muscles throughout the down swing and the follow through movements.
