Elbows held close together. - (Changed - 01/01/2009)

On of the most important basic principles that you must learn is to keep the shoulders and the arms held together as a very compact unit at all times, which is achieved by keeping the elbows held as close together as it is physically possible.

It is absolutely vital that you adhere to this basic principle at all times but especially when the arms interact, thus performing the Key Movement.

This action of holding the elbows close together performs four functions:-

(1) The arms are forced to remain totally passive as the shoulders rotate to the end of the back swing movement, thus literally pushing the passive arms to the end of the back swing movement.

(2) It neutralises the muscles of the forearms and therefore assists in keeping the hands in a passive condition.

(3) The arms are forced to remain fully extended.

(4) It maintains the triangular shape of the upper body unit at all times, even whilst the passive arms interact.

This is an action that feels very strange at first, especially if you do not generally keep the shoulders and the arms held tightly together as a compact unit, but persevere with this action and you will see a dramatic change in the quality of your golf.

If you keep the shoulders and the arms held tightly together by keeping the elbows drawn as close together as it is physically possible, the feeling that you will have is that the muscles of the forearms feel completely inactive causing the arms to be totally passive to the movement of the shoulder/arms-unit.

Simply watch the professional golfers to see how they keep the elbows close together throughout the complete golf swing movement, but especially as the arms interact.

This is one aspect of the golf swing that most golfers fail to give any serious consideration, so remember, as soon as you draw the elbows together, it is absolutely vital that you maintain the arms in this condition throughout the complete golf swing movement and simply use the a combination of the movement of the hips, and to a lesser degree the lower back muscles, to return the shoulders back to the parallel to the target line.

( It is so easy to forget this very important basic principle as you perform the back swing and the down swing movement, so concentrate very hard at keeping the elbows held together to the completion of the golf swing movement.)

If you can teach yourself to hold the arms in this manner as you carry out the golf swing, you will see a dramatic improvement in your golfing skills.

** You must become obsessed with holding the elbows as close together as it is physically possible as you carry out the golf swing thus keeping the arms and the hands in a passive condition.
