Swinging. - Master- (Changed - 06/08/2008)

When I say the swing the arms, this does not mean that the arms are swinging loosely, far from it, but more about the fact that the movement of the passive arms are totally controlled during the back swing movement by simply rotating a very compact upper body around the central core of the spine and literally pushing the passive arms to the end of the back swing movement.

The upper body unit must be held so tightly together throughout the complete golf swing so that any independent movement of the arms is totally eliminated except at the precise moment when the club head makes contact with the ball when the muscles of the left shoulder pull the passive arms through the contact area.

Therefore it is the skill of the golfer to judge the movement so that the club head makes contact with the ball at the precise moment the shoulders return to the original address position.

However as soon as the shoulders return to the original address position and simultaneously the club head makes contact with the ball, the shoulders must be held in this position, albeit for only a milli-second whilst the muscles of the left shoulder pull the passive arms through the contact area thus forcing the right arm to adopt the fully straightened position.

Then as soon as the both arms are straight, the right shoulder must rotate under the chin whilst the movement of the hips and the lower back muscles continue to force the compact upper body unit to rotate around the central core of the spine.

Therefore the down swing must be judged so that six things occur simultaneously at the moment of impact:-

1) The head remains slightly behind the ball.
2) The Shoulder are parallel to the target line.
3) The club head makes contact with the ball.
4) The hands have returned to exactly the original address position.
5) The muscles of the left shoulder begin to pull the passive arms through the contact area
6) The right arm begins to straighten.
