Impact position -
(Changed - 04/05/2012)
Watch this slow motion video
of Adam Scott playing the 3rd hole at Augusta.
Use the controls on the video to stop the video at the precise
moment the club head strikes the ball.
Similarly watch this frontal
view and stop the video at the impact position and note the
position of his body at this point and try to copy it.
(Notice how the arms/hand swing across the body and also swing
inside the parallel to the target line.)
In both of these videos you will notice how the arms/hands are
ahead of the body at the precise moment the club head strikes the
ball and the right shoulder has already begun to rotate under the
chin and the whole body is turning to face the target area, whilst
the upper body angles have been maintained.
Also notice that the right elbow is tucked into the waist at the
point of impact.
If you run on either of the videos from the point of impact,
you will note that Adam Scott is forcing the arms to interact whilst
also swinging the arms past the body at speed, but importantly,
also forcing the arms/hands to swing inside the parallel to the
target line.
What you cannot see is that he is using his shoulder muscles from
this point onwards to ensure that the arms are accelerating past
the body on this inside the "parallel to the target line"
in order to force the arms to interact, whilst the whole body in
quickly turning to face the target area.
However the key to the success of this movement is to watch
the ball right up to the precise moment the club head strikes the
golf ball - failure to do this will result in the timing of the
strike being out of sync resulting in a pushed or pulled shot.
Try to pose in this impact position for a few second before
reversing the whole movement.
This is done by holding the pose as you make a very short back swing
- before returning the whole body back to the correct impact position.
Develop this action in stages until you are almost performing a
full back swing movement.
Therefore as the club head strikes the ball
with a descending blow you must ensure that:-
1) The spine angle remains slightly tilted to the right, with the
right shoulder beginning to rotate under the chin.
2) The elbows
remain as close together as is physically possible and the muscles
of the arms are a very firm condition and the left arm fully extended,
but with the right elbow close
to the waist, but importantly, the upper body unit remains
firmly held together as a very compact unit.
3) The head is in a position so
that the left eye is slightly behind the ball.
( This position must be maintained to the completion of the
golf swing.)
4) The arms/hands are have
passed the body.
5) The upper
body unit remain tightly held together as a very compact unit.
6) The hips are facing
the target area at approximately 45 degrees, and are still rotating
towards the target area but have not swayed away from the
original address position.
7) The weight of the body is predominantly over the left
leg,
8) Your eyes must be fully focused
on the back edge of the golf ball.
From the precise moment the ball is struck the arms/hands continue
to swing inside the parallel to the target line and the whole body
quickly turns to fully face the target area.
As you become familiar with the correct swing movement you can
begin to add extra
power by forcing the right arm into the fully straightened position
at the point of impact thus performing the Key
Movement, but that is something to be left for much later.
